About

American soprano Sophie Caplin is known for her silver tone, “skillful high soprano range” and“expert comic acting.” A versatile performer across many genres, she has appeared most recently as Riccardo in Scarlatti’s il trionfo dell’onore with Amherst Early Music Festival and with Baroque Opera Workshop at Queens College. Other recent and upcoming performances include Phani in Les Indes Galantes with Opera OrQuesta, solo cantata BuxWV 5 with the Buxtehude Festival Chorale, concerts of the repertoire of Barbara Strozzi with baroque ensemble Sospiri, as well as lute and French art song solo recitals.

Sophie finds great joy in collaborating with musicians across many different styles and has a deep love for Baroque music. An avid chamber musician, Sophie has studied at Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute, Amherst Early Music Festival and Haymarket Opera Company’s summer course. Her nuanced performance, knowledge of historical styles and flexibility make her a sought after interpreter of Baroque works. She is also a passionate interpreter of art song and has performed solo recitals across many genres, thoughtfully crafting programs to transport audiences. She believes that the symbiotic relationship of music and language both equally informing and elevating each other, as well as the collaboration and discovery between the singer and the pianist make Art song one of the ultimate forms of musical expression

Sophie was a finalist in the 2024 Schubert Club Student Scholarship Competition and first place in North Carolina NATS 13A in 2021. She won the Canadian Sinfonietta Young Artist Competition in 2019 and was a student finalist in the inaugural Camille Coloratura Awards. Sophie holds BAs in Music and French from Duke University, studying with Dr. Sandra Cotton and a MM from UNCG where she studied with Dr. Robert Wells.
